What a private houseboat night is actually like

You board around midday and lunch is served almost immediately — usually Kerala rice, a fish curry, thoran and pappadam, cooked in the galley behind you. The afternoon is spent moving slowly through the wider lakes and then into the coconut-shaded canals, close enough to the banks to watch village life going past. Sunset is the reason to be on the upper deck. After dark the boat moors, dinner is served, and it is genuinely silent apart from the water.

The boats we use are deluxe category with air-conditioned bedrooms, attached bathrooms, a covered dining area and an open sun deck. Nothing is shared with another group.

Kuttanad: farming below sea level

The stretch of Kuttanad the boats cross is one of the very few places on earth where farming happens below sea level. The paddy fields sit lower than the canals that feed them, held back by bunds, and the whole landscape reads as water with fields cut into it rather than the other way round. It is at its most striking right after the monsoon, when everything is full and green.

Kayaking and the narrow canals

A houseboat cannot enter the smallest canals. If you want to see the villages properly, a morning kayak is the way to do it — silent, at eye level with the banks, past people washing clothes, children heading to school by boat and fishermen working the shallows. We can add a guided kayaking session to any itinerary that includes the Alleppey leg.

When to cruise the backwaters

November to February is the classic window: dry, cool and calm. The monsoon months from June to September are green, quiet and cheaper, and the boats are fully covered so rain is no obstacle. March to May is hot in the afternoon but the evenings on the water are still excellent, and this is the least crowded of the dry-season periods.
