What children actually enjoy in Kerala
The houseboat is almost always the winner — a whole boat to explore, meals cooked on board, and open water on both sides. Elephant sightings on the Periyar Lake boat safari in Thekkady come a close second, followed by the spice plantation walk, where cardamom, pepper, vanilla and cinnamon are growing at eye level and you can smell all four. In Munnar, Mattupetty Dam boating and the echo across the lake at Echo Point work for every age group.
Rooms, meals and the practical things
We book three-star and deluxe properties on a breakfast-included plan, with extra beds or connecting rooms arranged in advance rather than requested at check-in. On the houseboat all meals are covered. Fussy eaters are genuinely fine here — every hotel we use serves both South Indian and North Indian food, and we will flag vegetarian or Jain requirements to each property before arrival.
Best time for a family holiday in Kerala
October to February is the most comfortable weather for all ages and lines up with school holidays in December. April and May are hot on the coast but fine in Munnar, which makes hill-weighted itineraries the summer choice. The monsoon from June to September is the cheapest and greenest, and works well for families who do not need beach time.
